Copal is pitch from a Burseraceae-family tree sacred to the Maya Indians. The name “copal” comes from the Nahautl word for “incense.” Copal resin is burned during divination, and believed to give nourishment to the gods at household alters and during initiation ceremonies. It represents the gathering of experience and the recognition of responsibility to the self and to all living creatures.
