Diving Deep with Spring Cleaning Tips

As daylight stretches longer and longer with the coming of Spring, are you noticing that a certain amount of dust and cobwebs have slowly accumulated in the darker corners of your home? Winter’s cozy nights and stormy days can easily hide a years’ worth of dirt and smudges, ones that Spring’s sunny disposition unveils quite starkly.

It’s time to take advantage of the longer daylight hours by sprucing up your home! Kinda sounds like a drag though, doesn’t it? Especially when it’s just beginning to look nice outside! But you may want to rethink how you look at your chores because according to Psychology Today, recent research shows that every hour of cleaning you do each week is associated with a 53% boost in your overall happiness. So grab some cleaning gloves and get ready for a serotonin boost while you start making your place sparkle!

  • Check Your Furnace Filter

  • Most furnace filters need to be replaced about 4 times a year, but every filter has different needs based on use or local environmental conditions. Checking it will allow you to see just how much dust has accumulated on the filter throughout the past month. If you're a pet owner, or live in a dry dusty location, you'll want to check it more regularly. If it’s dirty, then it’s time for a quick trip to the local hardware store, followed by a simple switch with a new, clean filter when you return.

  • Makeover Your Mattress

  • While you are sprucing up your comforter and pillow covers in the washing machine, why not clean your mattress by grabbing a vacuum with an upholstery attachment and vacuuming the entire surface? Before you vacuum however, mix a cup of baking soda with a few drops of your favorite essential oil and sprinkle the mixture on your mattress, letting it sit for ½ an hour. This will help get rid of dust mites. Finally vacuum the baking soda off along with those mites and your mattress will be as good as new!

  • Clear Your Entryway

  • Your front entryway and coat rack can often become a dumping ground for winterized objects such as muddy boots, dripping jackets, junk mail or accessories such as hats and scarves. As Winter fades, remove everything that is no longer seasonally appropriate, cleaning up any salt or slush stains. This is a perfect time to wash your cold-weather jackets (or send them to the dry cleaners) while you swap them for something more appropriate for warmer temperatures.

  • Ditch Expired Skincare

  • Do you keep track of the expiration date on your makeup and skincare? Some items have an expiration date, but many just have a period in which the product is still good after opening. Be honest with yourself about how long it’s been since you purchased your skincare products and cut out those that have passed their expiration date (for example, mascara lasts 3 to 6 months, foundation and concealer are good for about 1 ½ years and face serum should be replaced after 6 to 8 months). Recycle what items you can, and try to buy earth and animal friendly products – they’ll be better for your skin AND the environment!

  • Polish Those Appliances

  • You remember to clean out the microwave and to remove the mineral deposits in the coffee machine or hot tea maker, but it’s easy to forget about larger kitchen appliances. Running the clean cycle on the oven is fairly simple to do, but cleaning the dishwasher or washing machine often gets overlooked. Clean out your dishwasher’s filter, then fill a dishwasher safe bowl with a cup of white distilled vinegar and place it on the bottom rack of the dishwasher. Run on a hot cycle. To clean the washing machine, run the washing machine on a hot cycle with 2 cups of white distilled vinegar instead of detergent. Then rinse with a second hot cycle without any vinegar or detergent.
