As the air grows crisp and the leaves turn vibrant shades of red and orange, the holiday season is upon us. And for many, that means one thing: pumpkin pie. There's just something about the combination of warm spices, creamy filling, and flaky crust that makes this dessert a staple at holiday meals. In my family, no holiday gathering was complete without my grandmother's famous pumpkin pie. Her recipe has been passed down for generations, and now I want to share a modified version of it with you. So, let's gather around the table and fall in love with pumpkin pie all over again.
Pumpkin pie holds a special place in our hearts and holiday traditions. It's not just a dessert; it's a symbol of warmth, love, and cherished memories. Every bite takes us back to cozy autumn evenings gathered around the table with loved ones. Pumpkin pie represents the harvest season and the abundance of blessings in our lives. It's a reminder to slow down, savor the moment, and appreciate the simple pleasures. As we indulge in a slice of this delicious treat, we are reminded of the generations before us who passed down this cherished recipe. Pumpkin pie is not just food; it's a way to connect with our roots and honor the traditions that make us who we are. So, this holiday season, let's embrace the sentimental value of pumpkin pie and celebrate the joy it brings to our lives.
When it comes to pumpkin pie, my grandmother Annie's recipe is the ultimate classic. Every year, she would gather the family around the kitchen counter as she carefully measured out the ingredients and mixed them together. It was a labor of love, and you could taste it in every bite. As I revisit her recipe, I can't help but feel a sense of nostalgia and gratitude for the family tradition she passed down to us. And beyond the sentimental value, there's something truly special about the flavors and spices she used. Pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg - these ingredients not only taste amazing, but they also have their own healing properties. Pumpkin is rich in fiber and beta-carotene, while cinnamon can help with digestion and blood sugar control. It's a reminder that food can be medicine and that taking the time to prepare a homemade dessert can be a form of self-care. So, as I recreate my grandmother's classic recipe, I'm also going inward, connecting with my roots, and honoring the power of food to nourish both body and soul.
In collaboration with Annie’s pumpkin pie recipe, I have combined our in-house Pumpkin Spice Blend.
Spice up your pumpkin pie, bread, or latte!
Our Pumpkin Spice Blend is a delicious combination of spices for a classic fall favorite! Traditional pumpkin spices like cinnamon and nutmeg are combined with warming ginger and burdock root to create a balanced spice for pies, lattes, breads, and treats for the season and throughout the year.
Ingredients: Cinnamon Powder, Nutmeg, Ginger Root, Allspice, Clove Bud, Burdock Root.
Now, let's talk about how we can make this beloved pumpkin pie recipe a little healthier without sacrificing any of the deliciousness. First, we can replace some of the sugar with natural sweeteners like maple syrup or honey. These alternatives not only add sweetness but also bring additional flavors to the pie. Secondly, we can swap out the traditional buttery crust for a nut or oat-based crust for a boost of fiber and nutrients. Finally, we can incorporate some alternative spices like ginger or cloves to add complexity to the flavor profile. With these modifications, we can enjoy a guilt-free slice of pumpkin pie that still satisfies our cravings and nourishes our bodies.
Let’s get started!
Here’s what you will need to make Annie’s Pumpkin Pie:
- 2 eggs
- 1 and 1/4 cup coconut sugar
- ¾ cup canned pumpkin or fresh
- ½ cup coconut milk
- 2 tsp Pumpkin Spice Blend
- 9” gluten-free pie crust (I love this one).
- ghee
To Make Your Pumpkin Pie:
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Combine your eggs and sugar together. Blend them together, but not too much so that they become foamy.
- In a separate bowl, combine the pumpkin and spices.
- Mix your egg into the pumpkin mixture.
- Add the coconut milk to the blend and mix.
- Place or mold your pie crust to the bottom of your pan.
- Sprinkle the bottom of the pie crust with a few dots of ghee and coconut sugar.
- Pour the pumpkin mixture into the pie crust.
- Sprinkle the top with ghee and coconut sugar.
- Bake at 375 degrees for about 10-15 minutes. Then, reduce the heat to 325 degrees for another 50 minutes.
- Let it cool down and enjoy!
As you gather around the table and enjoy a slice of pumpkin pie, consider elevating your dessert experience with some creative serving suggestions and pairings. One classic option is to top your pie with a generous scoop of coconut vanilla ice cream or a dollop of freshly whipped cream. The cool, creamy texture perfectly complements the warm, spiced flavors of the pie. For a unique twist, try serving your pumpkin pie with a drizzle of caramel sauce or a sprinkle of toasted pecans for added crunch. And if you're feeling adventurous, why not pair your pumpkin pie with a warm mug of apple cider or a creamy latte? The combination of flavors will surely make your taste buds sing. So go ahead, experiment with different toppings and beverages, and make your pumpkin pie experience even more delightful.
