The Magic of Hair! It becomes a part of our identity. It is the easiest way to shape-shift ourselves in the blink of an eye. It’s an example of expressing Art in our persona. In many ancient cultures hair was believed to be like extra feelers to our surrounding, like cat whiskers. Providing us with extra sensitivities to nature and energy. It is thought that, hair carries the memories of those years while growing and when you cut your hair it loses part of that memory or connection. Whether you are protecting your hair for sacred traditions or just because you care to have a healthy nourished head, taking care with natural herbal shampoos and rinses can be as easy as making a cup of tea.
For starters it’s a good idea to know what your scalp needs. Is it Dry, Oily or not as thick as you would like? Does your scalp tend to be oily? If so, you might want to use some sage or mullein for drying. In the PNW we see lots of folks with dry and itchy a good suggestion would be calendula, comfrey or marshmallow. If you are looking at trying to stimulate hair growth, lots of folks have used Rosemary and Burdock Root with success. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, a doctor may look at the Kidney’s for nourishing and to stimulate the growth of hair.
This is my favorite Herbal Shampoo Recipe, Mountain Mama. I add a bit of Apple Cider Vinegar for nourishing the scalp and also to be a preservative in the recipe. After washing my hair with Mountain Mama I do an herbal rinse with our Scalp Soother.
