Herbal How To: Improve Your Heart Health with a Hawthorn Berry Cordial!

Claire Porter
One of the oldest-known medicinal plants, the Hawthorn Shrub was first recorded as good for heart health in the first century by Greek herbalist Dioscorides. The shrub and its small red “haws” or berries were used in candies, jams, jellies, wines and cordials for centuries in Europe. In more recent times, its amazing heart healing benefits have become quite valuable to many practicing herbalists since heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the United States. Take advantage of both its emotional and physiological benefits by making a Hawthorne Berry Cordial! Combine 2 cups white brandy with 2 cups Hawthorne Berries, plus 1 teaspoon cardamom pods, 1 tablespoon dried cherries and 1 vanilla bean. Steep all ingredients together in a tightly sealed jar or bottle, away from direct sunlight for at least 30 days. Gently shake the mixture daily. After 30 days, strain all solids and add simple syrup or honey to taste. I will also be hosting a "Make a Hawthorn Berry Cordial" in the THS classroom space on February 16th at 7PM!
