Make Your Own: Digestive Bitters

There are many herbs that are considered bitter in nature that makes being creative with your recipe accessible. Most digestive herbs are considered to be a cooling herb and to balance an herbal digestive recipe adding herbs that are warming like cinnamon, clove, cardamom and ginger provide a good balance to your blend. Some folks will use alcohol or vinegar as their base to infuse the herbs into. These are several bitter herbs to consider for your perfect formula: Gentian Root Angelica Root Dandelion Root Yellowdock Root Quassia Bark Bitter Orange Wormwood Coffee Beans Chicory Yarrow Mugwort Milk Thistle Goldenseal Oregon Grape Root Peppermint Chamomile Cinchona Rue Make a big batch for your family and friends. Digestive bitters are the gift that keeps giving.

Orange & Chamomile Recipe:

Here’s what you will need: -4 Oranges -1cup 151-proof Neutral Grain Spirit. (Such as Everclear) -1 teaspoon Angelica Root -1 teaspoon Chamomile -1 teaspoon Gentian Root -1 teaspoon Yarrow -1 ½ cups 101-proof Bourbon -1/4 cup Apple Cider Vinegar -1/2 teaspoon Cardamom pods -1/2 teaspoon Cloves -1 Star Anise -1 32oz jar with lid *Several containers for putting the Digestive Bitters in. To Make Your Own: Orange & Chamomile Bitters -Take the Oranges and zest all 4 oranges to a cookie sheet. Bake on about 100 degrees for about 30-40 minutes. Toasted, but not burnt. Check this often. All ovens are slightly different. -Once the orange zest cools, place all the herbs and spices into the 32oz jar. Cover with the alcohol and Apple Cider Vinegar. Label with the recipe and date made and date to pour. -Shake this jar often and let sit for 15-30 days. I suggest opening it up at day 15 and tasting it. If you want it to be stronger than let it sit for 30 days. -Once you have achieved desired flavor, strain all the herb content from the liquid. Label and bottle. To Use: Add a few drops to your water or beverage. Great to take in advance to heavy food that is hard for your body to process.
