The use of fire or of lighting virgin candles is a basic element in the binding of spells, the concocting of potions or the setting of ceremony. Considered sympathetic magic, candle magic which doesn’t require a lot of fancy ritual or expensive ceremonial artifacts. Remember when you were a child and you made a wish before you blew out the candles on your birthday cake? That was your first spell. The birthday-candle ritual is based on three key magical principles that can be applied to any spell: (1) Deciding on a goal, (2) visualizing the end result and (3) focusing your intent, or your will, to manifest that result. Use these steps to help guide you if you are new at witchcraft. Lighting a candle puts a spark of breath into your intent and is there to represent itself when you call in the elements. Lighting a candle lets your spell burn with a fiery flame of transformation. Fire is the element of change, a crucial ingredient for any invocation. Always use a new candle and let it burn out naturally – smaller candles are best. After you've selected a candle, you'll want to oil it or dress it before burning. This is a method by which you'll establish a soulful link between you and the candle itself. In other words, you're charging the candle with your own energy and personal vibrations, and projecting your intent into the wax before you burn it. To dress a candle, you'll need a natural oil – many practitioners like grapeseed because it has no smell.
