The King of Cups with Herbal Pairing Aloe Vera

Claire Porter

The nobleman in the King of Cups sits calmy on a large stone throne, adorned in a soft, aqua blue tunic and a dreamy green-gold cape fringed with bright red, a swirling, energetic blue sea surrounding him. A crown of blue, red and gold sits regally on his head while a large golden fish hangs around his neck, symbolizing his strong intuition and inner creativity. In his right hand, a golden goblet rests, where he most likely houses his ever-changing emotions. Meanwhile his left hand clutches a scepter, where his power, responsibility and authority are stored. Unlike other Cup cards whose subjects gaze at their cups looking for answers (Seven of Cups) or as a way to open up their intuitive natures (Queen of Cups), the King of this suit is too preoccupied with the important political, diplomatic and intellectual matters of ruling his kingdom. Self-mastery of his deep emotions and innate perceptions is his first priority. The great responsibility of ruling naturally creates the need for routine, for a bit of rigidity and consistent discipline. Due to his more emotional nature, this may seem stifling or awkward. But years of gentle practice have brought him to a place of self-awareness and ease – the days of being an eager, overly emotional and inexperienced Page are long behind him. He has now reached a place where he can successfully balance his instinct and intuition with his intellect and seasoned experience as a tranquil, forgiving and generous leader. He literally rides the waves of a turbulent sea with a plomb and grace, just as he navigates the highs and lows of rulership. Behind his right shoulder, a fish jumps out of the ocean, while on his left, a daring red ship sails courageously in the choppy waters, letting us know that this king can stay open to his emotions and subconscious impulses without being overwhelmed by them – steering his ship successfully to a safe harbor.

When the King of Cups attends a reading, we are reminded of how incredibly difficult it can be to stay in touch with our deeper yearnings, our ever-changing emotions, our quieter, intuitive perceptions and gut instincts while still staying present with the more routine, pragmatic demands of daily living. We shouldn’t deny our more ethereal, metaphysical natures so that we can embrace the robotic, demanding, mechanistic world that limits our creative nature and denies us fragilities, reflection or pause. But nor should we dip so deeply into our watery inner worlds that we are no longer able to accept or cope with harsh realities, daily concerns, or important responsibilities in favor of fantasies and allusions. Mastery over both our emotions and our intellect at the same time is alchemical. It is the hiss of water turning into steam as it hits flame. Magic. Power unfolds in this skill. The King of Cups understands this innately. He signifies a person who allows his emotional self-awareness to inform his strategic and pragmatic decision making. His ability to rule has come about because he has achieved mastery over his emotions — not by suppressing them but by understanding and channeling them constructively.

The perfect plant companion to the King of Cups is gentle and cooling Aloe Vera. A succulent originally native to the arid regions of Northern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula (including Saudi Arabia and Yemen), this spiky leafed plant has become a familiar staple both in commercial skin care products as well as a perfect addition to drought resistant gardens. Its ability to support skin health, accelerates burn healing and soothe digestive issues are well known and well documented. Indeed, studies show that it contains polysaccharides which offer deep hydration and tissue repair, enzymes like bradykinin that reduce pain and inflammation and growth hormones including auxins and gibberellins that can stimulate cell growth and protein synthesis. Indeed, aloe vera's healing and soothing power comes from a synergy of over 75 active compounds. Recent research has discovered that this unassuming succulent also helps lower blood sugar primarily by improving insulin sensitivity and stimulating insulin production. Potent polysaccharides as well as plant sterols like lophenol and cycloartenol, plus phenolic compounds (such as aloesin) and trace minerals including zinc and chromium modulate glucose metabolism, increase glycogen storage in the liver, improve insulin effectiveness and support carbohydrate metabolism.

Aloe Vera and the King of Cups show us the undeniable supremacy inherent in remaining calm and emotionally balanced while still staying connected to our inner subconscious nature. Intuition and intellect can work together and when they do the results aren’t just powerful, startling and insightful. They’re also sustainable and reliable. Yet charged, potent and perfectly tuned to help create a more balanced and equitable world.
