Theum palmatum
Frequently misinterpreted as the edible garden rhubarb, this herb native to Tibet and China is used short-term to relive constipation and tonify the bowel. With its astringent, cathartic, and cooling qualities, turkey rhubarb stimulates digestion, soothes the digestive tract, and moves energy downward. In smaller doses it can be helpful for chronic alternating diarrhea and constipation. Some healers apply it as a poultice to reduce fever and edema. It is also used as an oral rinse to treat toothaches and mouth sores. First mentioned in the Han Dynasty Shen Nong Canon Herbs in 206 B.C., turkey rhubarb has a long history of holistic healing.
*Like most stimulating laxatives, turkey rhubarb should be avoided during pregnancy and nursing unless under the guidance of a practitioner. Check for other contraindications as well.*
