Bala is one of the rare herbs that Ayurveda considers tridoshic. After ashwaganda, it is the most widely-used tonic herb in India. It is a soothing, sweet and mucilaginous herb that builds the immune system. When applied externally, it is very useful for nerve disorders and joint pain. It contains mild ephedrine-like compounds, and so is useful as a bronchial dilator for the treatment of asthma. These ephedrine-like alkaloids can also cause jitteriness in some- for this reason, internal use is contraindicated in those with hypertension or a tendency towards rapid or irregular pulse.
