Eleutherococcus senticosus 

Used by Russian athletes to improve stamina, eleuthero is a wonderful adaptogen.  Like other medicines in its class, it helps the body recalibrate its stress response.  This makes eleuthero potentially useful in a wide variety of ailments induced or exacerbated by stress. Eleuthero can be a vital asset to those weakened by prolonged tension, trauma, or illness, who now find themselves “running on empty.”  Deep depletion and exhaustion often leaves us hyper and/or hypo-reactive; we may experience an over-hasty panic response, heart palpitations, mood swings, and unusual sensitivity to stimuli, or we may find ourselves disinterested in food or sex, emotionally numb, and sleeping excessively.  In these cases, eleuthero can help the body recharge and restore balance.  Eleuthero’s balancing effect also shows up in its ability to diffuse heat stuck in the core and to warm the body’s periphery.
