Hamamelis virginiana  

Witch hazel is a warming, astringent, and acrid herb traditionally used in Chinese medicine for soreness due to cold stagnation that impedes the flow of blood and qi in the vasculature. It is a common topical and internal remedy for hemorrhoids and varicose veins. Witch hazel makes an effective gargle for sore throat and mouth sores. The astringency of witch hazel helps improves the tone and action of the bowels as well, typically when there is a tendency towards diarrhea. Witch hazel can be applied topically to alleviate pain, to soothe burns and sunburn, and to help tone the skin and shrink pores.
