Marshmallow root is a cooling demulcent useful for dry, irritated, and inflamed tissue states. It is great for dry, tickly coughs, or coughs involving thick, hardened lung congestion. In a tea or gargle, it can also be useful for soothing sore throats. Marshmallow is great for constipation, especially when used with bitters, bulk laxatives such as flaxseed, and/or triphala. It has an affinity for the urinary tract system, making it useful for inflammation of the bladder and urethra as well as kidney inflammation and irritation. By lubricating passages within the body, it can also assist in the release of gravel and stones.
