Piper methysticum
Kava kava comes to us from the Pacific Islands, where it has been traditionally used for thousands of years, and is considered "the drink of peace". Pacific islanders have historically used it to promote relaxation and camaraderie at social gatherings. Kava helps to calm nervous tension in the body and mind and to quickly reduce anxiety. It can be useful for restoring clarity to those suffering from anxious, racing thoughts. Kava is great for reducing pain and spasms anywhere in the body, and is one of the premiere nervines for relieving physical tension, including tension headaches, rheumatic pains, back pain, and tight, aching muscles. Kava also exerts an analgesic and antispasmodic effect on the urinary tract, making it a great herb to include in blends for painful cystitis or UTIs. The primary active ingredients in kava are not easily water-soluble, so many brew kava in rich coconut milk or wring it out through cloth to help the extract the beneficial properties. Kava has an unusual taste and creates a numbing sensation in the mouth- be ready for this! Start with a small dose and work up; if you feel “rubbery” or “too relaxed,” take less next time.
*Like many herbs, kava may react with or compound the effects of prescription drugs, including psychiatric drugs. Kava is not for long-term use or use during pregnancy or nursing. Check for other contraindications*
