Hamamelis virginiana

Most commonly known for its astringent properties, witch hazel leaf is used both internally and externally. The leaf, unlike the bark, contains a significant amount of volatile oil. Internally, it is used to treat bleeding or diarrhea. It makes a great mouth wash and gargle, especially when paired with peppermint, myrrh and/or neem leaf. Externally, it is used for insect bites, certain kinds of acne, minor cuts and scratches, and inflammation with swelling. It has also been widely employed in formulas for hemorrhoids.
